Karl Gilbert
Senior Youth Worker
Karl is Patchworks Senior worker, appointed in 2025 following the completion of his BA (hons) in Informal Education at Sunderland University in 2024.
He attended Patchwork as a child, had a friendship group as a youth, then completed a placement for his Gateshead College L3 Sports Science course with us. He fell in love with the ‘behind the scenes’ and volunteered. Then worked sessionally until a part-time position was available.
He completed his L3 in youthwork before moving on to the degree. Karl has taken to academia like a duck to water, excelling at both University and college before that, winning prestigious awards at both places. Karl credits this to being home-schooled since age 11, and not being ‘switched-off’ to education. Whatever the reason Karls thirst for knowledge and self-education is exactly what Patchwork needs.
He brings a total focus and dedication to the role. Whilst being a great all-rounder Karl leads on all our outdoor work and lads work. He completed his D1 certificate and is one of the projects minibus drivers.
Karl has a passion for building relationships with people and helping develop their lives. He uses his personable personality to help young people grow through group work and the art of conversation, young people in the area see him as a role model and use his success as an empowering, achievable goal.
Going forward we see Karl as the future of Patchwork. He has new ideas and views that he brings to the table, along with and understanding and respect for the journey so far. Great things await.
